Picture
Who is JONIA MCCLENNEY & RAIZ BRAZIL?
Her love and respect for Dance and Performing Arts was transferred to her love for Samba and other Brazilian Dances/Art Form. She wanted more to represent these styles of dance, the same way more traditional dance styles like Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop and even specialty dances like Salsa, Flamenco, Belly Dance, etc.. have the theatrical approach to numbers, performances, attention to detail in the technique, resulting in amazing production numbers out there, Jonia believed that the Brazilian Samba and other Brazilian Dances deserve the same respect, and that she could create great Brazilian Dance Numbers with a theatrical approach, representing the Brazilian Culture and Art Form with authenticity, professionalism, with attention to detail for the essence of what it is, but also being in the level of a Master Piece choreographically speaking, educating and entertaining the audiences.

In February of 2008 she had the debut of Raiz Brazil Dance Company, in the Sambala Samba School Carnival Ball in the Vault 350 in Long Beach. Jonia in 2008, won also the Samba competition for the “Queen of the Drums” (“Rainha da Bateria”)of Sambala Samba School, Title that she kept for the past 4 years and she was honored in represent Sambala as the “Queen of the Drums”.

Who is Relson Gracie? / Gracie Arizona?

Picture
We made some announcements a few weeks back about when we confirmed our special guests Jiu Jitsu Academy - Gracie Arizona! What we didn't tell you was, who Relson Gracie is, and what significance he has to Brazilian culture worldwide!

RELSON GRACIE:
Relson Gracie is the second oldest son of Grandmaster Helio Gracie, the man who is credited as innovating the Jiu-Jitsu taught by Mitsuyo “Count Koma” Maeda into what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, also referred to as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Relson was born into the most influential martial arts family of the modern era. Ten years after the commissioning of Academia Gracie, Grandmaster Helio Gracie held the world’s first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Gurilandia Clube, Botafogo. Relson competed in this historical event at the age of 10 and was the Brazilian National Champion in both his own weight class and the open division for an unprecedented 22 years straight! His record and domination of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu earned him the name “Campeao,” Portuguese for Champion. Relson’s accomplishments did not go unnoticed.

Although Relson’s techniques are deeply rooted in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, as taught to him by his father, Grandmaster Helio Gracie, his personal style has focused on “street effective” techniques. As such, he has developed a Jiu-Jitsu designed for defending yourself in a survival situation where there are no rules.

Picture
GRACIE ARIZONA: (Nathan Zigler)
The school is run by Relson Gracie Black Belt Nathan Zigler. We pride ourselves on a friendly training atmosphere focused on the technical aspects of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  Whether you’re looking for self-defense, sport BJJ or just a great way to get fit while learning to defend yourself, this is a good school for you. We are a club, not a commercial business. Our priority is to train productively and safely in a fun, friendly environment. Our goal is to train and learn technique, not to pummel each other. However, do not mistake compassion for weakness; we have regular sparring matches as part of every class to test skills and provide aggressive training. Our reputation as a highly-technical and have various relationships with all of the other BJJ schools and instructors in town.

Nathan Zigler Accomplishments:
  • Jiu Jitsu Black Belt 3rd degree
  • 20 years Jiu Jitsu Experience
  • 2012 Pan Am Bronze Medalist
  • 2011 Worlds No-Gi Silver Medalist
  • 2011 Grapplers Quest Gold Medalist
  • 2003 Pan Am Gold Medalist

"If you have ever been curious as to what it takes to learn, study and get invovled in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Day will offer a 45 minute session with the Gracie Arizona Academy lead by Nathan Zigler and some of the top Jiu Jitsu students in the valley. Workshop is Free as part of the paid Ticket admission to the Brazilian Day Festival".

BDAZ welcomes another great act! BATALA!

Picture
Picture
Batala Los Angeles is a samba reggae music and dance ensemble. Led by Musical director Mario Pallais.

DescriptionBatala—an international samba reggae performance group—was founded in Paris in 1997 by Giba Goncalves, a Bahian percussionist (Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, Muzenza, Male Debale, Jimmy Cliff, Tupi Nago, and Kaoma). One of the founders of the Afro Bloco Cortejo Afro, an arts education project to help underserved young people living in poor communities, Goncalves moved to Paris in 1997 and founded Batalá as the European wing of the project. Today, Batala Paris is the oldest of all the international Batala contingents.

Cortejo Afro and Batala share much of the same repertoire and since 1999, Batala groups have performed every year at the Salvador’s carnaval as part of Cortejo Afro. From its inception in Paris, individual Batala organizations have sprung up all over the globe in countries as diverse as Brazil, England, Spain, Wales, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Angola, South Africa, and The Netherlands. In the United States, Batala Washington DC was founded in 2007 and Batala New York City was established in 2011. Batala Houston and Batala San Francisco and Los Angeles are currently being formed.

The international movement shares the samba reggae musical arrangements and percussion breaks composed by Goncalves, graphics, costumes, and dance movements. With a worldwide membership of over 800 drummers, the shared musical and artistic models facilitates the various groups to travel from country to country and participate in events together. Batala drums, sticks and mallets, drum straps, and costumes are produced in Salvador at Instituto Oya and Fabrica Batala under a fair trade agreement.

The name Batalá carries a double reference to the phrase “bateu lá,” meaning “hit there” in Portuguese and to Obatalá (Oxalá), the Candomblé diety who is the father of the Orixas and of all humanity. Draped in the purity of white, Obatalá is the source of all that is peaceful and compassionate
