This Saturday, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will host Arizona's largest celebration of Brazilian Day, that country's independence day.
Hosted by Afro:Baile, a Brazilian-music record label created by Miguel Ivery, the event is in its fifth year and will feature many aspects of Brazilian culture, including dance, martial arts and food. Here are three reasons to attend the event, which features indoor and outdoor activities: 1.Vibrant performances. The well-rounded event features 55 performers from Brazil and across the U.S. Axe Capoeira will showcase the martial art developed by slaves. Gracie Arizona instructors and students will demonstrate the grappling and ground fighting that make up Brazilian jiu jitsu. Dancers will perform Brazilian zouk, a couples dance characterized by the woman's flowing hair, as well as the samba, featuring elaborately costumed performers. Bands will perform samba and bossa nova music, and a samba queen will be crowned. 2. It's open to all ages. Unlike Carnaval with its party atmosphere, Brazilian Day is family-friendly with upbeat performances that will keep kids entertained. Hands-on activities include learning to play Brazilian instruments, learning capoeira and jiu jitsu moves, face painting, arts and crafts, and meeting performers for photo opportunities. The Phoenix Suns Gorilla will make an appearance from 1 to 2 p.m. 3. You can immerse yourself in a different culture. This is a great opportunity to try something new. Enjoy authentic Brazilian and Argentine dishes, as well as Brazil's national drink, the caipirinha, made with cachaca liquor, lime and sugar. Vendors will sell wares including colorful feather headbands, jewelry and Brazilian music. Get out on the dance floor and learn samba and capoeira moves.
